When you add your own audio file or choose a sound from the Library in Drum Machine Designer, you can adjust the sound without having to leave the Drum Machine Designer. A Drum Machine Designer track is a Track Stack — each pad has its own corresponding sub-track and channel strip holding the instrument and effect plug-ins for this pad.

Click the disclosure triangle next to the Drum Machine Designer's main track in the track header of the main window or above the track name in the Mixer. The channel will expand to show each Drum Machine Designer pad on its own channel strip and you can then adjust each pad on its own channel strip individually. When you select a sub-track channel strip, you can play each sound chromatically on a keyboard. You can save your custom-made kit as a patch, which you can then access in other projects on your Mac.

You can also use your kit and its samples on another Mac. When you select the Drum Machine Designer master track in the main window or the mixer, it distributes incoming notes to the sub-tracks automatically, according to the MIDI input and output note settings of each pad.

But if you select a sub-track, all incoming MIDI notes are passed on directly to the sub-track's channel strip with its instrument plug-in, which means you can play the sound chromatically and polyphonically. This is great for playing pitched kick drum or hi-hat melodies. Make sure the instrument plug-in for the particular sub-track has key tracking turned on and is set to polyphonic operation.

You can test this by putting a Test Oscillator plug-in on each track found in the Utilities plug-in menu , setting it to a dB sine wave at different frequencies, and watching your output. Thanks for the great question. I still need to clarify one thing, I mostly work with software instruments in logic. So, while mixing, the first thing to do is keep my Channel faders at UNITY GAIN and make sure the level meters are averaging at around dbfs on each channel and peaks at around -7dbfs with the help of gain plug in wherever necessary??

With software instruments, you can lower their volume instead of using a gain plugin. It makes it easier to pass the mix to another engineer and to fine tune the balance.

Really nice overview. I was shocked to see how many of my channels were clipping when I went to pre-fader metering! The first time you use pre-fader metering can definitely be shocking!

Thanks a million! Hi Graham, thanks for this video. The only part I am struggling with is what you say about callibrating in logic pro. Is this something I set in logic or in the SPL meter? I have played around with my output so that the output is at roughly an adjusted the monitor levels to show 83 DB on the SPL meter but not sure if this is what you mean?
